How to handle training and learning without the disruptions

Before teaming up with Forget Me Not® to deliver their training, Eremea struggled with training its workforce. Michelle Piccolo Executive Lead – Strategy and Innovation at Eremea described the situation as “challenging for a number of reasons.” The traditional training methods involved pulling employees offline, which disrupted client services and increased expenses.

“To take people offline for servicing creates disruption for clients,” Michelle explained, adding that it was “majorly disruptive” and resulted in “more expense” due to the need to back fill  employees during training sessions. The training sessions were ad hoc and not well-planned, often based on assumptions rather than the actual needs of the employees. This led to a compliance-focused approach rather than a needs-based one.

The primary method involved bringing employees into a central office for sessions, followed by one-on-one training during site visits. Michelle noted, “A lot of our training is directed towards our direct workers because we work in home care, so we need to make sure that they know what they’re doing when they’re delivering services.”

Disruptions create additional challenges

The main challenges Eremea faced included the disruption of client services and the high costs associated with taking employees offline for training. Additionally, the ad hoc nature of the training sessions meant that the training was not always relevant or effective. Michelle explained, “Once someone leaves the room, it’s almost like that sheep dip approach…we couldn’t tell whether people were applying it consistently and transferring those skills into the jobs that they were doing every day.”

The results of the traditional training methods were inconsistent. While there was some immediate improvement after the training sessions, the long-term knowledge retention and application of skills were lacking.

The “sheep dip” approach, where employees were trained en masse and expected to retain and apply all the information, proved ineffective. Michelle noted, “Probably 90% of what they were learning in that space was lost at the moment they walked out the door.”

Discovering Forget Me Not® to reimagine training

Eremea discovered Forget Me Not through a team member who had encountered the solution in a previous workplace. Michelle shared, “One of our team members had seen it in a previous workplace…so when they came across to us, and we were talking about our need to rethink our whole approach to training, that’s how we made the connection.

Eremea was initially attracted to Forget Me Not® because of its mastery-focused learning approach. However, the real turning point came during the initial conversations with the Forget Me Not® team. “Within the first five minutes of the conversation, there was a significant shift in our thinking about how we could deliver learning, knowing that staff could be trained for a few minutes during each work shift,” Michelle said.

The ability for employees to master job critical knowledge at their own pace, coupled with insights into their progress, made it a no-brainer for Eremea.

Preparing to Work with Forget Me Not®

The preparation phase was smooth and positive. Michelle expressed that “the solution speaks for itself. It’s backed up by research.” The initial impression was that this would be a great partnership focused on creating long-term value for both businesses. “We felt like it was a partnership. Eremea had high expectations going into the implementation of Forget Me Not®.
